Austin, the capital of Texas, is said to be one of the most interesting places to live in Texas. Most of the citizens of Austin are quite proud of the weird quirkiness of the town that gives it the charm it so deserves. Green living in Austin is pretty easy to do with the extensive bus system, amazing stores around town, a cooperative local government, and great utility company.
It doesn’t matter if you’re trying to find organic food to bring home to dine in or you’re looking to dine out organically Austin has it all.
If you’re looking to dine out in Austin here are some great choices:
Kerbey Lane Cafe – While my girlfriend and I were in Austin visiting friends we met up at Kerbey Lane Cafe for dinner. Let me tell you the food is very good and the staff is good and some of them fit the Austin profile perfectly. They mark organic food and vegan food properly so you know what you’re getting. If you have the chance you should check out one of the 4 locations in Austin.
Mr. Natural – Mr. Natural is a Mexican food restaurant offering a 100% vegetarian menu as well as vegan, wheat-free, non-dairy, or ovo-lacto meals. They also have a bakery, health food store and Yoga/mediation area. I’ve never been there, but the food looks amazing and the reviews are great.
Progress Cafe – Progress is a great example of the cool places you can find in Austin, Texas. The menu looks great and is filled with yummy organic locally grown dishes. The space itself is unique and the staff is great from what I heard. Thanks goes out to JasonW for suggesting Progress Cafe be added to the list.
Here are some great choices if you would like to get your own ingredients and dine in:
Austin Farmers’ Market – Every Wednesday between the hours of 4 – 8 p.m at Triangle Park, 4600 Guadalupe (46th Street — between Lamar and Guadalupe) and every Saturday 9 a.m. – 1 p.m at 4th & Guadalupe. Support local farms, ranches, dairies and nurseries (150 mile radius of Austin) by buying local. At the Austin Farmers’ Market you’ll find year-round fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, honey, eggs and plants.
Wheatsville Coop – Wheatsville coop is a cooperative grocery owned by its members. Anyone can shop at Wheatsville Coop for their fresh organic and mostly locally grown or made products. They also have a pretty yummy deli that is great for a sandwich or party platters. Wheatsville also encourages reusing containers and allows customers to bring their containers back to reuse them.
Whole Foods Market – I’m sure many of you have heard of Whole Foods Market it’s a fast spreading chain grocery store that offers a lot of natural, organic and in some cases locally grown products.
Sun Harvest – Had I known Sun Harvest was in Austin it would have been one of the first places I listed. We have one here in San Antonio and I love it. The food seems to be more fresh then many of the other big organic stores around here and better priced with very friendly staff. If you’re looking for a great place to find organic products I highly suggest Sun Harvest. Thanks goes to Chuck for suggesting Sun Harvest and letting me know they exist in Austin.
I haven’t lived in Austin for over a year now so my memory is a little rusty. If you know of more places that should be on this list by all means email me or leave a comment. I’d love to hear what you all think about these places.

I wasn’t sure, but is Bess considered green dining in Austin? I know it’s owned by Sandra Bullock and I heard she uses eco-friendly utensils and to go packaging. If anyone has been there and can vouch for it I’ll put it up.

If I ever go to Austin, I will have to try and remember these…I wish our area had more “green places” but I can’t think of a single one!

There are two Sun Harvest groceries in Austin, one on South Lamar, one in a strip mall on Anderson Lane, close to MoPac. Their days may be numbered because Whole Foods is trying to acquire them.
Anyway, they have a better selection of bulk foods than Whole Foods, and better prices on most everything.

Chuck: Awesome Chuck thanks for that I had no idea they were there. We have a Sun Harvest here in San Antonio and it’s great. I’ll add them to the list and hope they stay away from Whole Foods. I’m always rootin’ for the lil guy.
